I am the son of PO A.J.E.(Alfie)Coyne who served on Perth 1 from commissioning in 1939 to her sinking in 1942. He was one of ten survivors who tried to sail back to Australia in the lifeboat "anzac' only to be captured at Tjilitjap. He then spent eighteen months as a POW passing away in October 1943 whilst working on the Burma railway.

My Grandfather was W.J.H Reece(Bill Reece) PO Stoker on the HMAS Perth when this great ship was taken.He received the DSM while sreving on this great ship.I am currently researching my Grandfathers exploits and would love to hear from any body who served with my Grandfather. Congratulations on such a great site, well done!

Hello i would just like to say your site is great and that the HMAS Perth and USS Houston story is one of bravery and tragedy i put a video of my gradfathers ship the HMS Penelope an arethusa class light cruiser and found a of the video for the Perth and Houston on there i had never heard about the ships until then but the video was a great tribute to so many brave men the leander class cruiers where a great ship RIP

Family members (daughter, nephew and niece) of Marc Goodwin are looking for information about his experiences after Perth went down in Sunda Strait. He has been dead now for a long time, and much of his history went with him because he was not willing to talk much about his experiences in the camps of the Railroad. We would love to hear from anyone who remembers him, or who knows anything -- he served on HMAS Stuart, then on HMAS Perth until her sinking. I am his niece, living now in the US. We are all interested in regaining this vital part of our family history.

I am the son-in-law of the late A E (Bert) Parkes who was an AB on the Perth during WWII. He survived the battle of sunda strait and the sinking of the Perth, and also survived three years on the Burma end of the railway. i am about to compile his diaries and would be happy to hear from other Perth relatives.

My uncle, Frank Nash, was on the original crew of HMAS Perth from her commissioning to sinking in Sunda Strait. I never knew him, as I was born in 1943. However, I have had the honour to meet some of his old comrades who survived the Burma Railway. "Proud Echo" was, and still is, a very special book for me. Every Anzac Day my thoughts go out to the Perth boys and Uncle Frank, who joined the RAN in 1936. Something to stir the spirit are the words of a Lieutenant Gunner on USS Houston, as Perth went to the aid of HMS Exeter - she'd just taken a Japanese salvo in the Battle of the Java Sea: 1708 hrs 27 February 1941 – HMS EXETER Hit By Japanese Salvo LT. H S Hamlin, #1 Turret, USS HOUSTON: “PERTH CAME UP PAST US AND LAID A SMOKE SCREEN ON THE ENGAGED SIDE OF EXETER.” “I’LL NEVER FORGET THE PERTH AS SHE CAME BY, SHE WAS A MAGNIFICENT SIGHT.” “ABSOLUTELY AT TOP SPEED, STREAMING SMOKE AND WITH BATTLE FLAGS FLYING AT BOTH YARD ARMS, AND A GREAT BIG WHITE ENSIGN AFT, ALL GUNS FIRING – AND SHE LOOKED LIKE A WARSHIP REALLY SHOULD.” “ONE OF THE FINEST SIGHTS I’VE EVER SEEN.”

I'm writing a biography on the late Chief Petty Officer Ray Parkin, HMAS Perth. Ray, as some might know wrote a trilogy of books on his experience of his survival of the sinking of the Perth; as a pow on the Thai Burma railway and then on his final year as a pow coalminer for the Japanese under the Inland Sea of Japan. Ray was one of the original Commissioning Crew sent to Portsmouth, England to collect and commission the Perth in 1939. I would like to know if there are any men left alive from that crew. Judy Patching's recent death might well sound the last of these men. I think Ray was the second to last of this crew? Doe anyone knows if there are any left of this original crew? Also I think (?) there are 21 sailors from the HMAS Perth left alive today. Can anyone add to this list for me, as I would like to mention who they are in my book. Thank you. Pattie Wright
